TAIA-JAMA Meeting with Thai Government on EV Promotion Policy in Thailand

On December 3, 2015, the Working Group 005 (WG 005) from Thai Automotive Industry Association (TAIA) together with representatives from Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) have visited Mr. Alongkorn Ponlaboot, First Vice-Chairman of National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) at the Parliament House. JAMA has proposed the concept to develop Electric Vehicle Industry Thai government for consideration, particularly on 1) Technical Requirement on Safety 2) International Standard Harmonization and 3) Battery Recycle.

Mr. Alongkorn Ponlaboot has acknowledged and agreed with EV development framework from JAMA. He suggested TAIA and JAMA propose EV framework to the Energy Steering Committee (Sub of NRSA) as the next action.

Thai government has clear policy to promote EV in Thailand. The objective of EV are to 1) reduce the usage of fossil fuel 2) promote alternative energy and 3) encourage environmental friendly product.

By the above direction, Thailand aims to be Hub of EV production in Asian region.

In year 2015, Thai government has invited stakeholders from government sectors and private sectors to discuss and shared concerned issues. WG 005 has involved and raised concerned to the government.

At present, Thailand has to import gasoline from foreign countries. EV is one of the key factor to reduce the import volume and will the economy to be stable. On the other hand, EV has less of air and noise pollution which is suitable for big city like Bangkok. Thailand is also looking forward to be exporter of EV to all Asian countries.

Thai Government has appreciated TAIA-JAMA’s suggestions on the framework for EV promotion in Thailand for sustainable development.
